Kazakhstan Expands Digital Labels to Track Beer, Antelope, and More

Kazakhstan is broadening its mandatory digital labelling system to cover more products. The expansion begins on December 1, 2023, with new rules for beer, motor oils, saiga antelope derivatives, and light industry goods. Authorities will use unique Data Matrix codes to track items from production to sale.

The first phase of the new system kicks off on December 1, 2023. Saiga antelope derivatives will be the first to require digital labels, reflecting efforts to manage the species’ growing population of 3.9 million. Controlled culling has been approved based on scientific research, farmer input, and international standards. Saiga meat is already sold in nine regions, including the capital, with prices starting at 2,300 tenge.

The expanded digital labelling system aims to improve transparency and regulation across multiple industries. Saiga antelope management will now include stricter tracking, while beer, motor oils, and light goods will follow in stages. The government has set clear deadlines for each category’s compliance.
