Kamala Harris, the former Vice President, graced a public event in San Francisco for the first time in a while. The gala, organized by Emerge, aimed to focus on women's participation in elections, but Harris steered the conversation towards critiquing the initial 100 days of Trump's presidency, as reported by The New York Times.
Harris took a dig at the U.S. President, accusing him of orchestrating "the grandest economic disaster" of modern times, and abandoning American beliefs. She argued that Trump's tariffs caused significant harm to American citizens.
Further, Harris leveled allegations against her presidential opponent, claiming they violated presidential norms and instigated a constitutional crisis. She asserted that such actions by Trump undermine the system of checks and balances.

"When the system of checks and balances breaks down, when Congress doesn't step up, when the courts falter, or if the president disregards their decisions - that's a constitutional crisis," said Harris, accentuating that such a crisis impacts everyone.
According to Harris, the solution lies in listening to "the voice of the people."
AN ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
Halfway through her speech, filled with grim rhetoric, Harris broke the tension, suggesting the audience take a moment to detach.
She shared a heartwarming tale about a viral video from April, featuring elephants at the San Diego Zoo joining forces to shield the youngest members of their herd during an earthquake.
"Have you seen this video? If not, just Google it!" she said, followed by her signature laugh.
Harris saw the elephants' behavior as a powerful metaphor, pointing out how those who exploit fear are most effective when they divide society.
"They want to divide the herd, make everyone feel isolated," Harris observed, hinting at the actions of the Trump administration.
FUTURE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES
The Democratic Party had been in a state of crisis even before Harris' election loss, due to internal disharmony and a lack of leadership. In her speech, Harris effectively named potential Democratic candidates who, in her opinion, could challenge the Republican candidate in the upcoming presidential election. "Senators Cory Booker, Chris Van Hollen, Chris Murphy, Representatives Jasmine Crockett, Maxwell Frost, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Bernie Sanders, speak with moral clarity," the former Vice President declared. Harris is far from abandoning her own political aspirations. Since her defeat in the presidential election in November 2024, Kamala Harris has been keeping a low profile, avoiding public engagements. Her speech at the Emerge gala was an opportunity for her to establish a comeback. Although she didn't mention her plans, media outlets are discussing her potential run for governor of California in 2026 or another presidential campaign in 2028.
