Jerod Mayo leaves Patriots coaching for a private equity leadership role
Jerod Mayo has moved from football coaching to private equity after a brief stint as head coach of the New England Patriots. The former linebacker, who spent years with the team as both player and assistant, was dismissed in 2024 following a difficult season. He has now taken on a leadership role at Fifth Down Capital, an investment firm specialising in generational companies.
Mayo’s connection with the Patriots began long before his coaching career. He played for the team as a linebacker from 2008 to 2015, then transitioned into coaching in 2019. For five seasons, he worked as the linebackers coach before being promoted to head coach in 2024.
His time in charge, however, was short-lived. The Patriots finished with a 4-13 record, leading to his dismissal after just one season. Despite this setback, Mayo had already built a reputation beyond football. He holds a political science degree from the University of Tennessee and spent years as an investor and advisor to private businesses. Before returning to the Patriots as a coach, he worked in corporate roles, including a stint as vice president of business development at Optum. His experience in finance and business development paved the way for his latest move. In February 2025, he joined Fifth Down Capital as a managing director, shifting his focus entirely to investment strategy.
Mayo’s transition marks the end of his football career and the start of a new chapter in private equity. His background in both sports and business positions him well for his role at Fifth Down Capital. The firm, known for backing high-potential companies, now gains a managing director with a diverse professional history.
