Jeff Bezos Docks His $500M Superyacht in Costa Rica Amid Luxury Tourism Boom

Billionaire Jeff Bezos recently arrived in Costa Rica aboard his $500 million superyacht, the Koru. The 416-foot vessel anchored offshore, drawing attention from locals and yacht enthusiasts. Bezos and his partner, Lauren Sánchez, were spotted using a helicopter to reach the luxury yacht before heading to Isla El Coco with a submarine.

The visit comes as Costa Rica sees a rise in ultra-luxury tourism, with more helicopters, private jets, and massive yachts arriving in recent years. This trend follows a 2021 law change that legalised commercial chartering for foreign-flagged superyachts, previously banned in the country. The new rules introduced a 2.5 percent tax on charter contract income, sparking growth in marina developments and bookings.

Marcos, a local yacht enthusiast, filmed the *Koru* anchored off the coast. He welcomed the increase in luxury vessels, noting their positive impact on tourism. However, the *Koru*'s size—far exceeding the 250-foot limit at Marina Papagayo—meant it had to stay offshore rather than dock at the country's largest marina. Bezos and Sánchez were later seen travelling to Isla El Coco, a remote island, using both a helicopter and a submarine. Their high-profile arrival highlights Costa Rica's growing appeal as a destination for elite travellers.

The 2021 law shift has made Costa Rica more accessible to superyacht owners, boosting local tourism and infrastructure. While exact figures on registered charter yachts remain unclear, the presence of vessels like the Koru signals a new era of luxury travel in the region. The country's marinas continue adapting to accommodate larger yachts and wealthier visitors.
