Ita Airways eyes Rome-Ljubljana route amid Slovenia's subsidized flight push

Ita Airways is set to introduce a new route connecting Rome and Ljubljana. The move comes as part of a broader push to expand its European network. Slovenia's Infrastructure Ministry is expected to confirm the decision in the coming days. The Slovenian government is reviewing bids for state-subsidized flights, with Ita Airways among four competing airlines. Officials have yet to name the other bidders, and no confirmation of Ita's success has been made public. The selected carriers will need to commit to operating the routes for at least three years.

Priority destinations under the funding scheme include Vienna, Prague, Berlin, and Rome. Over €10 million has been allocated to support these new connections. The programme aims to boost air travel links between Slovenia and key European cities.

Lufthansa, which holds a stake in Ita Airways, sees the expansion as a way to increase connecting traffic through Rome. This strategy aligns with plans to strengthen long-haul routes to the U.S., using Rome as a hub for transatlantic flights. A final decision on the subsidized routes is expected soon. If approved, Ita Airways' Rome-Ljubljana service would mark another step in its European growth. The airline's bid remains unconfirmed, but the ministry's announcement will clarify the outcome.
