Isuzu's 2022 D-Max LS-U+ Crew Cab 4x4 receives a comprehensive evaluation in this review.

The Isuzu D-Max lineup has expanded with the addition of the new top-spec model, the LS-U+. Sitting between the regular LS-U and the range-topping X-Terrain, the LS-U+ offers a blend of comfort and capability, catering to a broad range of users.

Enhanced Features and Aesthetics

The LS-U+ boasts more features than a regular LS-U without requiring additional dealer options. It presents a less boisterous appearance than the X-Terrain. The LS-U+ comes with a premium leather interior, dual-zone air-con, and plenty of electric adjustability for the seats. It also features automatic Bi-LED headlights, LED taillights, and 18-inch machined-face alloy wheels.

The LS-U+ is equipped with Isuzu's Intelligent Driver Assistance System (IDAS), featuring autonomous emergency braking with turn assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist. For added convenience, the LS-U+ features walk-away door locking and keyless entry.

Equal Capability, Different Focus

Both the LS-U+ and the X-Terrain share the same core drivetrain and mechanical capability, including 4WD and strong diesel engines. However, the X-Terrain emphasizes more premium tech and comfort-oriented equipment.

The X-Terrain, the flagship D-Max model, adds numerous enhancements such as a 360° Surround View Monitor for better maneuvering and off-road precision, as well as exclusive styling touches and premium paint options. Pricing reflects this step-up, with the X-Terrain being the most expensive in the lineup.

Performance and Efficiency

The 4JJ3 engine in the LS-U+ produces 140kW at 3600rpm and 450Nm between 1600-2600rpm, following a recent overhaul that included a new block, pistons, crankshaft, cylinder head, and a variable geometry turbo. The LS-U+ has a payload capacity of 988kg, with a GVM of 3100kg and a kerb weight of 2112kg (2165kg for the test vehicle with additional features).

Fuel consumption for the LS-U+, driven on a mix of highway and urban routes, was 8.2L/100km, close to Isuzu's claimed combined average of 8.0L/100km.

Practicality and Convenience

The LS-U+ comes with a style tray that has a factory-fitted tub liner and dimensions of 1570mm long, 1530mm wide, and 490mm deep. The electric roller hard cover of the LS-U+ is more likely to be used frequently due to its convenience.

A tow ball receiver is standard on the LS-U+, with various tow bar, electronic brake controller, and wiring harness options available. The LS-U+ is only offered in crew cab configuration and comes with a style tray.

Safety and Technology

The LS-U+ shares the same five-star ANCAP safety rating and eight airbags as the rest of the D-Max range. It also comes with an eight-speaker surround sound system and a 9.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, DAB+ digital radio, and a user-friendly sat-nav.

The LS-U+ now has a Lane Support System switch, allowing drivers to turn off the autonomous safety systems on the fly.

In summary, the LS-U+ focuses on providing a well-rounded ute experience with good comfort and capability, while the X-Terrain adds advanced technology, enhanced safety gear, and premium styling features, making it the range-topping, more luxurious and off-road ready option within the 2023 Isuzu D-Max lineup.

  1. The LS-U+, with its premium leather interior, automatic Bi-LED headlights, LED taillights, and 18-inch machined-face alloy wheels, brings an element of sophistication to the automotive industry.
  2. The finance department might find it interesting to note that the LS-U+ offers a blend of comfort and capability, catering to a broad range of lifestyle preferences in the transportation sector.
  3. With its advanced safety technology and stylish design, the X-Terrain, the flagship D-Max model, appeals to those seeking luxury and off-road readiness in their cars, demonstrating how different focuses can cater to varying segments within the same industry.
