Guwahati Airport's New Terminal 2 Wins International Architectural Award
The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahah, Assam, has been honoured with the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Airports and Transport Centres category. This prestigious award, presented by The Chicago Athenaeum, recognizes outstanding architectural design worldwide.
The new terminal, spanning 140,000 sq m, has the capacity to handle 13 million passengers annually, marking a sixfold increase from the previous facility. The terminal's infrastructure includes elevated traffic lanes, ten contact stands, and 22 remote stands, ensuring efficient passenger movement.
The terminal was designed with sustainability in mind. It operates on solar power and incorporates water recycling systems and energy-efficient lighting. A prominent feature at the terminal is the Sky Forest, which introduces Assam's natural greenery into the terminal, creating a harmonious blend of modern architecture and local culture.
The terminal reflects Assam's cultural heritage through the use of bamboo, orchids, and traditional gamocha motifs. Technology such as CT baggage scanners and Digi Yatra e-gates have been integrated to improve efficiency and streamline the passenger experience.
The Guwahati Airport's redevelopment aims to enhance passenger services and support growing traffic volumes. The terminal integrates a range of sustainable features, including a green roof, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient lighting.
The Guwahati Airport is not mentioned in the list of recognized projects, but it has been awarded the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Airports and Transport Centres category.
