Integrated efforts for elderly people sought
A recent meeting in Rajshahi has highlighted the urgent need for better support for elderly people and those with disabilities. Organised by Caritas Bangladesh and backed by the Social Development for Dignity and Betterment (SDDB) project, the event brought together officials and community leaders to discuss practical solutions.
The initiative was launched by the Rajshahi divisional administration under Deputy Commissioner (DC) leadership. Speakers at the event included DSS deputy director Monira Khatun, deputy civil surgeon Dr Mahbuba Khatun, and Caritas regional director Arook Toppo.
Monira Khatun called for a more welcoming environment in both society and families to improve the lives of elderly people. She also noted that schoolgirls could take an active role in providing care and support. Dr Mahbuba Khatun added that respecting parents could help prevent elderly individuals from facing difficult circumstances later in life. The meeting explored ways to set up 'one-stop solution centres' in every upazila to streamline support services. Attendees also recognised the value of elderly people’s knowledge and experience, which could benefit wider society. The SDDB project itself focuses on reducing poverty, boosting economic opportunities, and ensuring inclusive education for vulnerable groups. Many elderly and disabled individuals still suffer from repression and neglect due to their vulnerability. The discussions emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts to address these challenges effectively.
The meeting concluded with a clear call for stronger community and institutional action. Plans for local support centres and greater involvement of younger generations were key outcomes. Organisers stressed that real change would require sustained collaboration between government bodies, NGOs, and families.
