The key focus was the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with the fourth round of talks held in Auckland from November 3, 2025. Goyal also discussed a potential free trade agreement with the European Union during his Brussels visit from October 26 to 28, 2025.
India's exports to New Zealand are diverse, including clothing, fabrics, home textiles, medicines, refined petrol, agricultural equipment, auto parts, iron and steel, paper products, electronics, shrimps, diamonds, and basmati rice. Meanwhile, New Zealand's major imports from India are agricultural goods, minerals, apples, kiwifruit, meat products, coking coal, logs and sawn timber, wool, and scrap metals.
The bilateral merchandise trade between the two countries stood at USD 1.3 billion in 2024-25, marking a significant growth of nearly 49 per cent over the previous year. Formal negotiations for the FTA were launched on March 16, 2025, with Goyal and New Zealand's Todd McClay working together to expedite the process for a comprehensive, mutually beneficial economic partnership.
Goyal's visit to New Zealand and Brussels underscores India's commitment to expanding trade news. With the fourth round of FTA negotiations underway, both countries aim to strengthen their economic cooperation, potentially leading to increased trade and investment opportunities.
