Increased Train Ticket Costs in Germany: Potential Impact on Mobility

The German Social Association (SoVD) has criticized the upcoming increase in the Germany Ticket price, which is expected to rise from the current 58 euros per month to between 62 and 64 euros per month starting from 2026.

The criticism comes as various media outlets have reported on the expected increase. The special transport ministers' conference, scheduled to take place on Thursday, is set to discuss a binding commitment for the permanent financing of the Germany Ticket project.

The conference will involve the Federal Ministry of Transport, the transport ministers of the German federal states (Länder), and representatives from the federal government. Michaela Engelmeier, the chair of SoVD, has expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of the increased ticket price on the mobility transition.

Engelmeier emphasized the importance of ensuring mobility for all, regardless of financial means. She highlighted the importance of maintaining goals for barrier-free access and expanding public transport. The German Social Association (SoVD) has also called for a strong signal for affordable and sustainable mobility from the special transport ministers' conference.

Engelmeier mentioned that the last increase in ticket price already had negative effects. She called for a long-term funding commitment from both the federal government and the states for sustainable mobility in Germany.

The German Social Association (SoVD) has also emphasized the importance of ensuring mobility for all, regardless of financial means. They have expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of the increased ticket price on the mobility transition.

If implemented, the new ticket price will take effect from 2026. The special transport ministers' conference is expected to provide a binding commitment for the permanent financing of the Germany Ticket project, aimed at accessible and sustainable mobility in Germany.
