The Election Commission (EC) of India has announced significant changes in the remuneration of Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) and other election functionaries in Bihar. As of August 2, 2025, BLOs will now receive an annual salary of ₹12,000, a doubling of their previous annual pay of ₹6,000. BLO Supervisors will now earn ₹18,000 annually.
In addition, BLOs are eligible for a special incentive of ₹6,000 for their participation in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list, which is currently ongoing in Bihar. This incentive is aimed at recognising the crucial role BLOs play in the management of electoral rolls and the revision of voters' lists.
The EC has also introduced honorariums for other election functionaries, such as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), with EROs receiving ₹30,000 per annum and assistant EROs receiving ₹25,000 per annum.
The SIR is a significant exercise aimed at ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the voters' list. According to new EC norms, one booth will not have more than 1,200 voters.
BLOs are grassroots-level functionaries who help the EC prepare and update the voters' list at the booth level. They are responsible for the addition or deletion of voters in their particular booth. The EC's decision to double the remuneration of BLOs is likely to boost their motivation and efficiency in their duties.
