Vehicles and Pollution: Uncovering the Cleanest and Dirtiest Rides in NRW

Cars, both immaculate and filthy, traverse the roads of North Rhine-Westphalia. - In North Rhine-Westphalia, the region witnesses a diverse spectrum of vehicles, ranging from pristine to heavily soiled.

Let's take a look at the emissions of the automobiles in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). According to an analysis of data by the German Press Agency using Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) data, the percentage of vehicles using relatively outdated exhaust technology differs among registration districts, ranging from approximately one-third to only a fifth. There are considerable differences between the cleanest cars as well.

In NRW, the city of Duisburg exhibits the highest proportion of vehicles following older, less strict emission standards, such as Euro 1 to Euro 4, at 30.7%. The cities of Gelsenkirchen and Herne also feature above 30%. Following them are Hamm and the districts of Minden-Lübbecke (both 29.3%) and Lippe (28.5%). On a national level, Duisburg ranks third in this category.

At the opposite end of the spectrum in NRW, the district of Euskirchen boasts 20.1%, followed by the city of Düsseldorf (21.3%) and the districts of Siegen-Wittgenstein (21.6%) and Olpe (21.7%). Here, the percentage of vehicles adhering to the Euro 1 to Euro 4 emission standards is the least.

Notably, Euskirchen and Düsseldorf also lead the way in terms of eco-friendly vehicles. If we factor in the proportion of electric cars and vehicles with the relatively new emission standard Euro 6, Euskirchen tops the list with 60.8%, trailing by a narrow margin by Düsseldorf with 60.1%. The city of Bochum and the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein follow closely with 56.7% and 56.4%, respectively.

Nationally, the city of Wolfsburg ranks highest in eco-friendly automobiles with 77.2%. However, as a significant automotive hub, Wolfsburg benefits from disproportionately high numbers of self-registrations and company cars, which can inflate the statistics in favor of clean vehicles. It should be noted that some of these vehicles may not even be driven within the district where they are registered.
