Bally's Corp and the Balgowlah Bowling Club: A Trademark Conundrum

In a surprising twist, the Balgowlah Bowling Club, an Australian company based on Sydney's north shore, holds the rights to the "Bally" name, potentially complicating branding efforts for US casino giant Bally's Corp as they spearhead a rescue deal for Star Entertainment Group.

The Balgowlah Bowling Club, commonly known as The Bally, operates under a more traditional model, focusing on food and beverage, live music, lawn bowls, and functions. Lawn bowls, a sport widely popular among senior citizens across Australia and the UK, is played by rolling slightly asymmetrical balls towards a smaller white ball known as the jack. The Bally does not have slot machines or permanent gaming facilities.

Tony Wagener, the Secretary Manager of the Balgowlah Bowling Club, applied for the trademark of its name last September. In a statement, he acknowledged that the application was coincidental, despite Bally's Corp's later involvement in the Star Entertainment Group rescue deal. Mr. Wagener expressed openness to discussions with the US casino giant, should they approach the club.

Bally's Corp is injecting AU$300 million into Star Entertainment with an option to convert debt into a controlling stake, marking their first land-based casino operations outside the U.S. The rescue deal received approval from Star shareholders in late June 2025. Initially, Bally's had planned to introduce its own brand in Australia as part of the takeover and potential rebranding of Star's casinos in New South Wales and Queensland.

However, the Balgowlah Bowling Club's trademark of its name may compel Bally's to reconsider its branding approach. If the trademark issue is not resolved, it could potentially lead to legal challenges. At present, there are no publicly available details regarding Bally's potential rebranding plans after the proposed acquisition of Star Entertainment Group, nor any specific information addressing conflicts related to the local Australian bowling club holding the trademark for the name "Bally."

Despite concerns about regulatory risks and potential trademark issues, the takeover and potential rebranding of Star's casinos by Bally's are still being discussed. It remains to be seen how this trademark conundrum will be resolved, and whether Bally's will retain its brand name, rebrand the acquired properties, or face any legal challenges related to the trademark.

  1. The trademark issue involving the Balgowlah Bowling Club's ownership of the "Bally" name may impact the finance and business decisions of Bally's Corp, especially as they delve into the casino industry and consider rebranding Star Entertainment Group's casinos in Australia.
  2. Despite Bally's Corp's expansion into the sports and entertainment sector, the presence of the "Bally" trademark in the Australian sports scene through the Balgowlah Bowling Club could pose a challenge to their branding and marketing strategies for their casino business.
