Illinois quantum education boom fuels future workforce growth
Illinois has seen a sharp rise in quantum-relevant education, with over 33,000 degrees and certificates awarded in the past year alone. This surge follows a decade-long growth trend, fuelled in part by national and state-level initiatives to expand the quantum workforce. The number of quantum-related qualifications in Illinois has climbed by 60% over the last ten years. A recent study identified 171 distinct educational programmes tied to the quantum industry, ranging from advanced degrees to short-term certificates. The latter made up the largest portion of completions across the state.
A 33% jump in these qualifications occurred after the National Quantum Initiative Act was passed. Researchers behind the study believe their methodology could now serve as a blueprint for measuring quantum workforce capacity nationwide. To further boost innovation, Illinois has established the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP). This hub aims to accelerate developments in quantum technology and microelectronics, reinforcing the state’s position in the sector. Economic projections suggest quantum technologies could contribute up to $80 billion to the Illinois-Wisconsin-Indiana region by 2035. The growth in education aligns with broader efforts to prepare for this expanding industry.
The rise in quantum qualifications reflects Illinois’s commitment to building a skilled workforce for emerging technologies. With new infrastructure like the IQMP and a steady increase in specialised education, the state is positioning itself as a key player in the future quantum economy.
