Intriguingly, this New Beetle was crafted to represent the close bond between the Autostadt in Wolfsburg and the EXPO 2000 in Hannover. The car bears the signatures of various personalities from the participating countries, who inscribed it during the inauguration of the EXPO. Small flags decorate its body, symbolizing the 155 nations that showcased their innovation and culture at the event.
Constructing Nostalgia: The Volkswagen New Beetle
Created in 1998 as one of the first retro-designed vehicles, the New Beetle drew inspiration from Volkswagen's iconic Beetle, known and admired worldwide. It was a celebration of the past, combined with modern amenities. The impressive public response to the "Concept 1" study in 1994 paved the way for its development.
The Volkswagen New Beetle "EXPO 2000": A Ride through Time
The showcased Beetle, built in 2000 and hitting the quarter-century mark this year, boasts a 1,896 cm³ four-cylinder diesel engine and can reach a top speed of 178 km/h with its 74 kW/101 PS. Its initial price in 2000 was 30,450 DM.
Now, visitors have the opportunity to see this remarkable piece of history in the ZeitHaus. The Autostadt is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm with a valid daily or annual pass.
