Hyundai and Genesis Set Ambitious Electric Vehicle Goals
Hyundai Motor Group, the South Korean automaker, has announced a series of ambitious plans to expand its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio and increase its presence in various global markets.
In a significant move, India will soon get its first locally designed EV from Hyundai. The company is also planning to launch its first range-extended electric vehicles in 2027, offering more than 600 miles (966 km) of combined range.
Hyundai's EV strategy includes the development of high-performance batteries, produced in-house. These batteries will be used in its range-extended electric vehicles, aiming to improve efficiency and performance.
The Hyundai Motor Group is also investing heavily in its production facilities. The Hyundai Metaplant in Georgia is being expanded with an investment of $2.7 billion, increasing production capacity by 200,000 vehicles annually over the next three years. This expansion is part of a broader $55 billion global investment plan and a $12.6 billion investment strategy specifically in Georgia.
The battery production at the plant will be a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, with both companies holding 50% stakes. The initial investment in the battery plant is $4.3 billion. Hyundai aims to produce more than 80% of vehicles sold in the United States domestically by 2030, with supply chain content increasing from 60% to 80%.
Hyundai's next-generation batteries, expected by 2027, will be 30% cheaper despite having a 15% higher energy density. Charging times will also drop by 15%.
In addition to EVs, Hyundai's N lineup will grow to more than seven models by the end of the decade, including the all-new Ioniq 6 N. The hybrid lineup will include more than 18 models by 2030.
Genesis, the luxury brand under the Hyundai Motor Group, aims to increase annual sales to 350,000 units by 2030 by expanding its presence in the United States, Europe, Korea, China, the Middle East, and emerging markets. Genesis plans to be in up to 20 European markets in the coming years.
Hyundai will offer an electrified large van in North America, and the Hyundai XCIENT fuel cell truck and Translead trailers will be available in North America. China will get a new C-segment electric sedan from Hyundai.
The company is also developing next-generation fuel cell systems for commercial vehicles, promising high efficiency, durability, and power output. Hyundai's cloud-based battery management system will be available in 2026, collecting data from diverse vehicle environments for faster, more precise diagnostics.
Lastly, Hyundai plans to launch a mid-size truck in North America by 2030, targeting the segment dominated by vehicles like Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, and the reborn Ram Dakota. The recently unveiled Elexio SUV will be available in China.
These ambitious plans demonstrate Hyundai's commitment to leading the EV revolution and expanding its global footprint.
