The Marines' Pull-Up Training Program: Success Through Proper Technique and Practice
How a Marine Officer Revolutionized Pull-Up Training for the Corps
Misty Posey, a Marine officer, developed a pull-up training program now used across the entire Corps. Now 49 and commanding a Marine unit in California, Posey struggled as a young recruit to complete the Marine Corps obstacle course. She learned to haul her body over walls and bars—and eventually designed a pull-up program of her own.
Pull-ups are a critical exercise that builds upper-body strength, grip endurance, and core stability while improving posture and functional fitness. Posey says most people achieve their first reps faster than they expect.
Her program, a blend of different training methods, is used by prospective recruits who have never done a single pull-up as well as seasoned Marines looking to boost performance. Posey recommends starting by assessing your current strength: Hang from a pull-up bar with palms facing outward and pull yourself up as high as possible.
Work within your range of motion, then drop, rest, and repeat—focusing on engaging your core and back muscles before each attempt. If you can't do a pull-up, try a chin-up instead, with palms facing toward your body.
Make sure to rest for two to five minutes between sets. Another option for beginners is to enlist a friend's help. Posey says partner-assisted pull-ups are the best way to achieve that first rep.
A partner can help you complete reps by gently supporting your lower back, assisting with the upward motion, and controlling the slow descent to build muscle. These slow negatives are called "eccentric reps" and are another great way to increase your rep count.
Posey warns against overtraining and pushing the body too hard. Finding the right balance—challenging yourself without overloading—is key.
