Wage Dispute at Hasseroeder Brewery in Wernigerode Triggers Employee Strike
Workers at the Hasseroeder Brewery in Wernigerode, Harz district, are on strike for higher wages during ongoing collective bargaining negotiations. The union, Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststaette (NGG), reports that employees from various departments, including production, bottling, and logistics, are participating in the 24-hour warning strike.
The dispute revolves around the NGG’s demand for a two-step wage increase for approximately 200 employees. The union proposes a 3.0 percent rise effective April 2025, followed by an additional 3.5 percent increase in April 2026. The employers' offer of a 5.5 percent hike over 24 months has been deemed insufficient by the union.
Katja Derer, NGG's business manager, asserted that the employers' offer falls far short of a fair compensation for the preceding years and the mounting cost of living. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that a portion of the workforce at the Wernigerode location is currently on strike. They stated that they facilitate work for those who wish to continue.
Hasseroeder beers continue to be available in supermarkets, bars, and restaurants as the strike scheduled from Tuesday evening to Wednesday evening concluded. The Hasseroeder brewery is part of the international corporation Anheuser-Busch InBev, working alongside well-known brands like Beck's, Corona, Spaten, and Franziskaner.
The collective bargaining agreement ended on March 31, and the subsequent negotiation session is not until July 9. The parties will have to engage in a dialogue to find a resolution before any further disruptions occur. Observers expect a compromise involving a moderate wage increase along with commitments to improving other employment terms.
- The union, NGG, is advocating for community aid in the form of a two-step wage increase for workers at the Hasseroeder Brewery, as they face a mounting cost of living and feel the previous years' work is undercompensated.
- As the manufacturing industry continues to grow, with Hasseroeder Brewery being part of the international corporation Anheuser-Busch InBev, the strike serves as a reminder of the importance of fair finance and energy management within the industry.
- The development of the regions affected by the strike could benefit from an agreement that ensures fair wages for workers, creating a more content and productive workforce, aiding in the overall growth and progress of the industry.
