Hessian municipalities are battling a persistent problem: rat infestations. Frankfurt, for instance, has seen a rise in consumer reports, with 261 cases in the previous year. Other cities like Hanau and Limburg have also been grappling with this issue for decades.
Cities are employing various strategies to control rat populations. Frankfurt, with 261 consumer reports last year, uses baits, traps, and campaigns. Hanau, with around 70 sightings annually, focuses on baiting sewers and trapping in flood channels. Darmstadt, with about 200 consumer reports per year, finds baiting effective in large parks like Herrngarten. Meanwhile, Limburg has been conducting regular campaigns for at least 30 years, with about 70 to 80 sightings each year.
Rats are considered unwanted guests due to their destructive behavior and potential to carry diseases. Offenbach, with 140 sightings this year, and Wiesbaden, with around 200 consumer reports per year, face issues with rats in their sewers, partly due to food disposal through toilets. Kassel, with 53 consumer reports so far this year, and Lampertheim, which fights rats in its water supply network, are also affected.
Hessian municipalities are actively working to manage rat populations. Strategies include baiting, trapping, and regular campaigns. Despite efforts, rats remain a persistent problem, with varying numbers of sightings across different cities. The destructive behavior and disease-carrying potential of rats underscore the importance of continued control measures.
