Still Thousands of Students Without Rooms at the Start of the Semester - Hesse's Dormitory Crisis: Over 8,500 Students Await Rooms
Hesse's student services are grappling with a surge in demand for student loan dormitory spaces, with over 8,500 applications pending. The high demand, driven by cheap rents, has led to a severe shortage of accommodation, particularly in Darmstadt and Marburg.
In Darmstadt, students face a wait of over two years for a student loan dormitory room. This is due to the high demand and a limited number of spaces - only 1,200 dormitory places are available for the city's 45,000 students. The situation is similarly challenging in Marburg, where students wait about twelve months for a room, despite the city having 3,500 dormitory spaces for its 30,000 students.
To tackle this issue, Frankfurt has implemented a bed exchange program, allowing students to offer temporary sleeping places. However, the root cause of the problem persists: there are almost a third more student loan applications than dormitory spaces in Hesse. Gießen, which has 2,200 dormitory spaces for its 25,000 students, plans to expand but is hindered by high construction costs.
With 12,900 dormitory spaces for 240,000 students, Hesse's current student loan accommodation is insufficient. The high demand, particularly in Darmstadt and Marburg, underscores the urgent need for more affordable student housing. Student services are working to mediate private rooms and shared apartments, but a long-term solution is required to address this growing student loan issue.
