Heating Costs Rise, Disproportionately Affecting Vulnerable Groups
September 2025 witnessed a slight uptick in natural gas and heating oil prices, with some alternative heating methods becoming more economical. However, the escalating costs continue to disproportionately burden vulnerable groups, including children and single parents.
Last month, natural gas and heating oil prices inched up compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, district heating and wood pellet heating grew cheaper. Experts caution that gas and oil prices could triple in the next two decades.
In 2024, 5.3 million Germans grappled with affording adequate heating. In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), 8.1 percent of residents faced the same challenge. Children and single parents are particularly susceptible to these rising costs. To curb expenses, consumers are advised to regularly compare prices among different providers. Local basic suppliers often command the highest prices.
While some alternative heating methods became more affordable in September 2025, the rising costs of gas and oil continue to disproportionately affect vulnerable groups. Regular price comparisons can help consumers economize on heating costs. However, the increasing number of people unable to afford adequate heating remains a pressing concern.
