Harmonic Backs Controversial Math Prodigy Despite Misconduct Claims

Harmonic, the research-focused organisation co-founded by Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, has named Neel Somani as the first recipient of its Rising Mathematician Research Sponsorship. The decision arrives amid ongoing debate, as Somani—formerly of Eclipse Labs—faces unresolved allegations of sexual misconduct, which he has repeatedly denied.

The sponsorship forms part of Harmonic's broader push to fund mathematical innovation, backed by a $1 million grant programme following its $120 million funding round last year.

Somani gained recognition for his work at Eclipse Labs, where he led the development of an Ethereum price solution using the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM). The technology, now live on mainnet, integrates Solana's high-speed virtual machine with Ethereum via Celestia's data availability layer. It claims to boost Ethereum's scalability to 1 million transactions per second—far beyond its current ~15 TPS—while cutting costs by 90-99% and enabling near-instant finality for complex decentralised applications.

His contributions have positioned Eclipse Labs as a key player in blockchain infrastructure. Yet the sponsorship has drawn scrutiny, given the ethical concerns surrounding his tenure there. Harmonic's choice to back Somani may reflect a calculated bid to tap into his technical expertise, but it also risks reputational fallout as the tech industry faces growing demands for accountability.

The organisation's $1 million grant initiative aims to support emerging researchers in mathematics and AI. Somani's selection as its inaugural awardee underscores Harmonic's focus on high-impact, cutting-edge work—even as it navigates the controversy tied to his past.

The sponsorship places Somani at the centre of Harmonic's research efforts, despite the lingering questions about his conduct. His work on Ethereum price remains a benchmark for blockchain innovation, while the decision tests Harmonic's balance between fostering talent and upholding ethical standards. The outcome could influence how similar organisations weigh risk and reputation in future funding choices.
