Gulf Power Grid's crucial overhead power lines nearing completion in Kuwait

The Al-Wafra Gulf Interconnection Station, a significant expansion project in the Gulf Interconnection Network, is progressing according to schedule, with key milestones expected to be met by the end of this year.

The Central Agency for Public Tenders has approved the awarding of the first-phase maintenance contract for the Doha Reverse Osmosis Seawater Desalination Plant to the second-lowest compliant bidder, following the disqualification of the lowest offer due to technical reasons.

The Al-Wafra station, inaugurated last month, will allow Kuwait to import up to 2,500 megawatts from the Gulf grid, depending on surplus availability among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The project is being implemented by the contractor of the General Authority for Gulf Interconnection.

As of the report, the project has reached 70 to 80 percent completion. The project is expected to significantly bolster electricity supply during peak summer demand.

Meanwhile, the Doha Desalination Plant will undergo modernization to improve efficiency, ensure reliability, and adopt environmentally friendly desalination technologies in line with sustainable development goals. The modernized plant will play a vital role in Kuwait's potable water security.

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy is planning to complete two overhead transmission lines linking the Wafra Gulf Interconnection Station to Sabah Al-Ahmad Stations 3Z and 4Z by the end of the year. The new lines will further enhance Kuwait’s grid capacity, strengthening electricity supply during peak demand periods and improving grid stability.

The new Al-Wafra station is equipped with cutting-edge monitoring, analysis, and fault-prediction systems, along with advanced cybersecurity protections. This advanced technology will ensure the smooth operation of the station and its integration into the GCC grid.

By enabling the distribution of clean energy and electricity trade, the project supports the GCC’s long-term clean energy strategy, helps reduce emissions, and leverages surplus capacity for economic returns. The project establishes Kuwait as a critical hub in regional electricity trade across the GCC and into Iraq, facilitating cross-border energy exchange and reducing reliance on single-market supply.

While major components are set for completion by the end of 2024 or mid-2025, complete readiness across the entire GCC-Kuwait-Iraq interconnection, including the 195-km Al-Wafra–Al-Faw link, is projected by 2026.
