Government officials from RMG (Ready Made Garment) industries urge immediate government intervention to tackle the ongoing gas crisis.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has called for immediate government action to address the ongoing gas crisis in the country's ready-made garment (RMG) sector. The crisis, which is affecting the operations of factories and potentially threatening exports and economic growth, was the focus of a recent meeting between BGMEA and the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
During the meeting, held on August 20, 20XX at the Secretariat, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu and Mohammad Saiful Islam, secretary of the ministry, discussed various solutions to the gas crisis. The meeting was also attended by BGMEA directors Abdur Rahim and ABM Shamsuddin, along with senior ministry officials.
One of the key points discussed was the verification and prioritization of new gas connections for the RMG sector. BGMEA urged the government to prioritise labor-intensive garment and textile industries when issuing new gas connections and to give priority to factories requesting small gas supply increases. The association also requested the energy ministry to speed up the verification of new Titas Gas connections.
Another concern raised by BGMEA was the insufficient gas pressure affecting many factories in the RMG sector, particularly those located at the ends of pipelines in areas like Dhamrai and Manikganj. The association asked for sufficient gas pressure (PSI) to be ensured for these facilities.
The meeting also focused on organizing separate application lists for new gas connection requests in the RMG sector to streamline the process and address the crisis more effectively. The ongoing gas crisis is negatively impacting the operations of factories in the RMG sector and could have far-reaching effects on the country's economy, given that the sector is a significant contributor to the nation's GDP.
Minister Tipu Munshi, who was not present at the meeting, has assured that the concerns raised by BGMEA will be given serious consideration. The meeting concluded with a commitment from both parties to work together to find a solution to the gas crisis and ensure the continued growth and success of the RMG sector in Bangladesh.
