Gold price surges as Oracle and Comcast reveal contrasting quarterly results

Markets saw a mixed performance in the third quarter of 2025. Materials and industrials led equity sectors, while consumer staples lagged. Gold bullion shone due to global uncertainties. Oracle Corporation (ORCL) and Comcast Corporation Class A (CMCSA) reported contrasting results, with Oracle's cloud-computing contract boost and Comcast's subscriber decline.

Oracle Corporation (ORCL) reported a significant increase in backlogs, including a five-year cloud-computing contract with OpenAI. This is expected to lift Oracle's top line and expand margins over time. Meanwhile, Comcast Corporation Class A (CMCSA) reported better-than-expected results but traded lower due to ongoing declines in broadband subscribers. The company is expected to outperform in the long term.

Philip Morris International Inc. (PM) reported better-than-expected earnings but slightly soft sales due to supply issues in Indonesia and Turkey. Noncombustible products led growth, and the company is committed to returning cash to shareholders. Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOG) shares were strong due to favorable rulings and remain reasonably valued, with cash shared through dividends and buybacks.

Elevance Health, Inc. (ELV) shares traded lower due to Medicaid coverage concerns but is expected to benefit from long-term secular demand for its managed care services in the US. Gold bullion was a leading contributor due to monetary policy uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and high sovereign debt levels. C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. (CHRW) implemented automated AI processes to cut costs and expand margins, potentially improving pricing due to stricter licensing requirements and capacity tightening.

The US Fund underperformed the S&P 500 Index in the period, with U.S. Fund A Shares returning 7.55% in the third quarter of 2025. Despite mixed performance, sectors like materials and industrials, along with gold bullion, contributed positively. Companies such as Oracle and Alphabet showed strong results, while Comcast and Elevance Health faced challenges. The market outlook remains influenced by global uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.
