Ghanaian startup 3Farmate revolutionizes farming with AI-powered robot FAMA
A Ghanaian startup called 3Farmate is changing farming with its autonomous robot, FAMA. Founded in a university dorm room in 2021, the company now offers farmers a high-tech way to plant crops without buying expensive equipment. The robot uses AI to navigate fields where GPS signals are weak or unavailable. 3Farmate was started by three engineers with expertise in robotics, software, and mechanical design. Their creation, FAMA, relies on a vision-based AI system instead of traditional GPS. This allows it to operate in remote areas where satellite signals are unreliable.
The robot has been tested extensively, completing over 60 runs across more than 100 acres of real farmland. It can cover between 27 and 35 acres in a single day, planting seeds with precision under 85mm. Farmers pay per acre for its use, avoiding any upfront costs for machinery. So far, Ghana remains the company's main market. With around $200,000 raised for research and development, 3Farmate plans to expand into other African countries in the coming years.
FAMA offers farmers a flexible and affordable way to improve planting accuracy. The robot's AI-driven navigation works where GPS fails, making it useful in rural areas. As 3Farmate grows, more farmers across Africa could soon benefit from this technology.
