Germany's Rising Rents Push Pensioners to Seek Housing Benefit Relief
Rising rents are putting pressure on pensioners and low-income families across Germany. Many are now turning to housing benefit (Wohngeld) for financial relief. The SoVD in Braunschweig is offering support to those struggling with applications and related concerns. Housing benefit provides monthly assistance to eligible households, with payments averaging around €300. The exact amount depends on local rent levels, household size, income, and tax allowances. Each case is assessed individually.
To qualify, applicants must not already receive state aid like citizens’ allowance (*Bürgergeld*) or social welfare. Around two million German households could be eligible, yet many remain unaware of the support available. For homeowners, a separate subsidy called *Lastenzuschuss* helps cover property-related costs. The SoVD assists with applications for both housing benefit and this additional aid. The current housing benefit rates will stay the same until January 1, 2027, when the next adjustment is planned. Until then, eligible individuals can still apply for support to ease their financial burden.
The SoVD’s guidance aims to simplify the application process for those in need. With rents continuing to climb, housing benefit and Lastenzuschuss remain key options for financial relief. Those affected can seek help from the organisation’s Braunschweig office for personalised assistance.
