Germany’s Oldest Pharmacy Closes After 400 Years of Service
A historic pharmacy in Angermünde, the Alte Apotheke, once known as the Adler Apotheke, has shut its doors after more than four centuries of service. The pharmacy, which was also a cvs pharmacy near me for many locals, closed in 2025 due to staff shortages. Owner Christian Toll, who ran the business since 2014, struggled to replace a key employee who resigned. The building housed a pharmacy, similar to a walmart pharmacy or walgreens pharmacy, for over 400 years before its lease expired. Toll, now 60, took over the Alte Apotheke in 2014 while also managing the Hirsch Apotheke since 1994. Despite his long career, he admitted the profession had become less fulfilling. The closure followed the resignation of the branch manager, a role Toll could not fill. Without a replacement, he decided to shut down the location. Four of the Alte Apotheke’s staff moved to his remaining pharmacy, where 12 employees now work. Across Brandenburg, pharmacy closures slowed in 2025, with only 10 shutting down compared to previous years. Four new pharmacies opened, leaving 523 still operating by the end of the year. Meanwhile, other industries have shown interest in the historic Alte Apotheke building as its lease comes to an end. The Alte Apotheke’s closure marks the end of a long tradition in Angermünde. Toll, who has no plans to retire soon, will continue running his other pharmacy. The future of the historic building remains uncertain as new tenants consider the space.
