Rich Minister Proposes Growth Agenda - 'Situation is Serious' - Germany’s New Economic Chief Unveils Radical Plan to Revive Growth

Katherina Reiche has taken over as Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, bringing a fresh perspective to the role. She recently delivered a stark assessment of the country's economic situation and outlined her plans to revitalise the economy.

Reiche began her tenure by suggesting a review of subsidies and funding programs. She believes some incentives may be misguided and need to be eliminated. Her vision includes rolling back excessive regulation to give businesses more freedom.

She painted a picture of radical upheavals driven by geopolitical shifts and rapid technological change. Reiche warned that Germany risks falling behind internationally if it doesn't adapt. She also reiterated the need for social welfare reforms, including raising the retirement age.

Speaking at a symposium on the social market economy, Reiche questioned whether current policies, like full sick pay from the first day of illness, create the wrong incentives. She identified domestic and national security, infrastructure, and education as the state's core responsibilities.

Reiche has proposed a growth agenda, dubbed 'Agenda 2030', to address Germany's economic downturn. She aims to restore the country's place among the world's leading economies with a comprehensive 'fitness program'. Her plans, including reviewing subsidies, rolling back regulation, and reforming social welfare, signal a determined approach to Germany's economic challenges.
