Germany’s Dream Ambulance Makes Final Wishes Come True for the Terminally Ill
A special ambulance in Salzgitter is turning final wishes into reality for those facing serious illness. The Johanniter Dream Ambulance, fully operational since October, offers transport for unforgettable moments—whether for a last trip, a wedding celebration, or a visit to cherished places. Funded entirely by donations, the project relies on volunteers and community support to keep running.
The idea behind the Dream Ambulance came from Dr. Thomas Schäfer, who launched the initiative in Salzgitter. The vehicle, equipped for medical needs, serves chronically ill patients, their carers, and families with seriously ill children. Its first missions included transporting a groom and his grandparents to a wedding, ensuring their presence on a day that mattered deeply. Weeks later, it took a terminally ill man to the Harz Mountains, where he revisited places filled with personal meaning.
The Dream Ambulance is now actively fulfilling wishes across the region. From weddings to final journeys, it provides comfort and joy to those in difficult circumstances. With ongoing donations and volunteer efforts, the service aims to keep making a difference for years to come.
