Fewer Donors in Times of Crisis - Germany’s Charitable Donations Plummet by 14% in 2025
Charitable giving in Germany has fallen sharply in 2025. Nationwide donations dropped by 14% in the first nine months, totaling €2.8 billion. Two states, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, saw an even steeper decline of 31% in contributions compared to last year.
The German Donation Council (Deutscher Spendenrat) collected and analysed the latest figures. Their report shows that residents in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland donated €161.0 million between January and September 2025. This marks a significant fall from the same period in 2024.
The decline in donations affects both the number of contributors and total funds raised. With fewer people giving, even higher individual donations have not offset the shortfall. The German Donation Council’s findings highlight a broader downward trend in charitable contributions across the country.
