Germany Speeds Up EV Charging Network Expansion with 1,000 New Fast-Charging Points
Germany is expanding its fast-test network for electric vehicles (EVs) at a rapid pace. The Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, led by Volker Wissing, has successfully tendered nearly 1,000 fast-charging points at 200 unmanaged rest areas. This follows the completion of the second part of the tender process for the Germany Network, a project coordinated by the Autobahn GmbH.
The Germany Network now boasts almost 9,000 fast-charging points at over 1,000 locations nationwide. The goal is to ensure that the next fast-charging location is accessible within a few minutes, with charging stations reachable every ten minutes on motorways. By 2026, charging points for electric cars will be installed across the country.
Michael Güntner, CEO of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, emphasized the importance of reliable charging for long-distance electric car travel. The organization is driving the build-out of fast charging points as part of the 'Deutschlandnetz' project. Contracts for charging points have been awarded to companies such as Fastned, E.ON, Autostrom, and TotalEnergies.
With the successful tendering of nearly 1,000 fast-test points and the completion of the second part of the Germany Network tender process, Germany is well on its way to achieving its goal of widespread fast-charging accessibility. The expansion increases user options and charging network density, making long-distance electric car travel more convenient and reliable.
