Wadephul advocates for more German investments in Africa - Germany Seeks Deeper Economic Ties with Kenya on Wadephul’s East Africa Tour

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has concluded a visit to Kenya as part of his East Africa tour. During his stay, he pushed for stronger economic ties and called for greater German investment in the region. A delegation of German business leaders, including representatives from fidelity investments, accompanied him on the trip.

Wadephul met with Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi, where both leaders stressed the importance of deepening bilateral relations. They also discussed ongoing cooperation on legal skilled labour migration, including the recruitment of Kenyan bus drivers for Wadephul’s home state. Concerns about a potential 'brain drain' from Kenya were dismissed by both ministers.

The German minister described Kenya as a 'true heavyweight' in East Africa, highlighting its political and economic influence. He noted that Kenya remains Germany’s most important trading partner in the region. However, Wadephul admitted that Germany’s current investment calculator safeguards were ineffective, giving China an early advantage. Before leaving Nairobi, Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to multilateralism. He argued against creating alternative processes outside the United Nations. His next stop will be Ethiopia, where he is scheduled to meet Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos and African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.

The visit aimed to strengthen economic and political cooperation between Germany and Kenya. Wadephul’s discussions focused on trade, investment, and legal migration pathways. His trip continues in Ethiopia, where further talks on regional partnerships are expected.
