Germany is revisiting its military service policies and pension contributions. While conscription was suspended 14 years ago, it will resume in 2027 with mandatory assessments. Meanwhile, pension rules for military and civilian service have been clarified.

Starting in 2027, young men will be legally required to undergo fitness assessments, but military service remains voluntary. This change does not affect the pension system, as military service periods already count towards pension, including full basic training duration and additional military service time not paid for by the employer.

For those choosing voluntary military service, terms can be up to 23 months, with pension contributions based on notional income set at 80% of the assumed average income since 2020. Previously, conscripts and civilian service participants did not pay into the pension system; instead, the federal government covered contributions based on notional income.

For those completing a Voluntary Social Year (FSJ), Voluntary Ecological Year (FÖJ), or Federal Volunteer service (BFD), pension credits are based on actual earnings and in-kind benefits. This is a change from the past, where these services did not count towards pension. Service periods are usually automatically reported to the pension insurance system, but individuals are encouraged to check their records for accuracy.
