Man from Rhineland-Palatinate loses 800,000 euros through fraud with cryptocurrencies - German Man Loses €800K in Elaborate Crypto Investment Scam
A man from Worms has lost around €800,000 in a cryptocurrency investment scam. The fraud began in late August or early September 2024, with scammers making first contact by phone and messaging apps. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed in public reports.
The scammers initially reached out to the victim in late August, posing as investment advisors and promising high returns from cryptocurrency exchange rate movements. Over time, they convinced him to install remote-access software on his computer, giving them control over his online banking.
For months, the victim transferred money to unknown accounts, believing his investments were growing. When he tried to withdraw supposed profits, the scammers refused. Instead, they demanded more payments for taxes and fees, escalating the financial losses. By the time the fraud was uncovered, the total damage had reached approximately €800,000.
The case highlights how scammers exploit trust and technology to drain victims’ funds. Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators, but investigations are ongoing. The victim’s transfers were made over several months before the scam was detected.
