Cartel Office to Examine Butter Price - German butter prices crash to €0.99 as farmers demand dumping probe
Butter prices in Germany have plummeted, with some retailers offering it for as little as €0.99. The Bavarian Farmers’ Association (BBV) has expressed concerns that these low prices may be illegal, accusing Arla Foods of dumping. The group has now urged for an official probe into the matter by the Federal Cartel Office. The BBV has formally requested that the office examine whether butter is being sold below production cost. According to the association, prices this low fail to cover expenses for dairies and farmers, potentially violating competition laws. Arla Foods, a major dairy producer, is at the center of these allegations. The probe request underscores growing tensions over butter pricing in Germany. If the Cartel Office finds evidence of unlawful dumping, it could result in regulatory action against Arla Foods or other producers. For now, farmers and industry groups are awaiting a response from authorities.
