Starting from 2026, burial fees in the city of Offenbach will skyrocket by up to 13% depending on the burial type, as per the latest city council meeting's decision. If all goes as planned on May 22, the new rules will kick in.
Why the Drastic Hike?
Here's the lowdown: the city administration points to two significant factors—declining burials after the COVID-19 era along with spiraling personnel and material costs due to inflation and higher wage agreements—as the main culprits for the hike.
Martin Wilhelm, the city treasurer, is straight-up about it: "Cash needs to be collected to cover costs." He further elaborates, "If revenue decreases and costs soar, we can't pull off miracles as a municipality—we've got to adjust the fees."
Earth Burials Take a Hit
A clear instance is a classic earth burial in a perpetual grave with a 30-year usage right. It's going to set you back an extra 430 euros, making it 4,311 euros from 2026—a whopping 11.1% increase. Urn burials in lawn perpetual graves won't get off scot-free either, with a 200 euro (10.1%) increase, bringing the total to 2,175 euros post-2026.
The mourning hall usage won't be spared the increase either. As of 2026, a 25-minute session, including clean-up and setup, will cost you 250 euros, up from the current 239 euros.
Comparing Offenbach with Neighboring Cities
The city claims the new fees are roughly on par with those in neighboring cities like Frankfurt and Hanau, despite minor inconsistencies among the services. Overall, they seem to fall within the regional range.
More Safety for Cemetery Staff
In addition to the fee hike, adjustments have been made to the cemetery regulations. The new rules prioritize employee safety: from now on, side access while occupying crypts is a no-no since it poses a threat to staff. Instead, they'll stack more coffins from above, a method that is safer but more labor-intensive and costly.
Offenbach Residents First
The new regulations also prioritize individuals with residency or birthplace in Offenbach when assigning burial sites on municipal cemeteries. The entire set of rules has also been revised to eliminate gender-biased language.
