FTC Investigates AI Chatbot Safety After Teen's Suicide
A mother has blamed a Character.AI chatbot for her 14-year-old son's suicide, sparking an investigation into the safety of AI chatbots for children. Letters have been sent to major tech companies, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reviewing safety and privacy protections for young users.
Following the tragic incident, the FTC has requested information from seven major tech companies: OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta, Snap, xAI, and Character Technologies. It is particularly concerned about chatbots acting as daily companions to children, potentially fostering emotional dependencies.
Meta has already taken action, barring its chatbot from discussing suicide and eating disorders with children after an investigation by Sen. Josh Hawley. The FTC's investigation was also prompted by leaked Meta guidelines permitting inappropriate content involving minors, raising concerns over mental health and explicit content risks linked to these chatbots. The agency is reviewing how companies limit children's use of chatbots, comply with US child privacy laws like COPPA, and inform users about data collection.
