The much-anticipated renovation of the B33, a key road in the picturesque Wachau region, has been completed as promised by Provincial Councilor for Transportation Udo Landbauer (FPÖ). The road, which underwent a comprehensive overhaul, is now ready to serve the community and boost traffic flow.

The renovation aimed to increase safety and ensure smooth traffic flow, and it seems that the objectives have been met. The asphalt paving of the roadway is now complete, and road markings have been applied. Temporary safety measures, such as the 'Rock&Safe' system, have been put in place to secure the slope in the connecting areas to the original rockslide event.

Looking ahead, construction for additional safety measures could begin as early as late autumn. These measures will include the installation of permanent cable barriers, with heights varying from three to five meters, depending on the section. Around 25 to 30 rock anchors will be installed in the slope to ensure long-term stability.

In summer 2025, official coordination with the district administration, forestry, and nature conservation will take place to implement further safety measures in the two adjacent areas of the rockslide. The plans for these areas are yet to be specified, but they are expected to focus on improving traffic safety.

The state of Lower Austria invested 2.1 million euros in comprehensive safety measures for the B33, making it a significant investment towards ensuring the safety and efficiency of the region's infrastructure. The total construction costs for the renovation amount to approximately 2.1 million euros.

In early April, a significant rockslide of approximately 6,000 cubic meters occurred on the B33. The renovation, which was completed before Easter, marks a significant milestone in the recovery process. Today, Thursday, the final spray coating of the renovated slope is being applied, marking the end of the immediate renovation phase.

The renovated B33 is set to serve the community well, offering a safer and more efficient route for travel in the Wachau region. The planned additional safety measures are expected to further enhance the road's safety and durability, ensuring it remains a reliable transportation artery for years to come.
