Disruption on Ulm-Stuttgart Railway Line Caused by Planned Works and Bomb Defusing Incident

A temporary disruption on the Ulm-Stuttgart railway line occurred this week due to a combination of planned engineering works and an unexpected bomb defusing incident.

The Ulm-Geislingen-Stuttgart railway line experienced temporary restrictions on Tuesday evening, following an overhead line damage near Amstetten. This disruption was a part of the planned infrastructural upgrades and renovations, including tunnel closures and major construction works, as part of the Stuttgart 21 modernization efforts in 2025 [1][5].

However, additional closures were not due to a bomb defusing incident, as suggested by some rumours. A thorough search of the available sources did not reveal any evidence of such an event affecting the Ulm-Stuttgart railway line or related lines [1][3][4].

The bomb, identified as a World War II relic, was discovered on a construction site of Stuttgart 21 in Untertürkheim on Tuesday. The bomb defusing operation did not impact the resumption of trains on the Ulm-Geislingen-Stuttgart railway line, as the disruption was fixed by Wednesday evening.

The temporary closure near Stuttgart affected many rail travelers, causing them to either use alternative routes or face extended travel times. Replacement traffic with two buses between Geislingen and Ulm was set up to cater to the affected passengers.

Trains of line RE5 from the direction of Stuttgart will end and start in Geislingen an der Steige, while trains of line RE5 from the direction of Friedrichshafen Stadt will end and start in Ulm Hbf. For those heading towards Stuttgart, an alternative option is to use the trains of RE 200 up to Wendlingen am Neckar.

By Wednesday evening, trains operated by Arverio were expected to resume their operations in the evening. Despite the disruption, the Ulm station remained a final stop for many travelers due to the temporary closure near Stuttgart.
