Five Brave Latin American Journalists Share Stories of Resilience in Berlin

Five brave journalists from Latin America will share their experiences at an upcoming event in Berlin. These fellows, supported by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Panter Foundation, have faced immense challenges while reporting on corruption, organized crime, and human rights abuses in their home countries of Mexico, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Ecuador.

Vania Pigeonutt, a Colombian journalist living in exile in Berlin as a 2022 Refuge Respite Fellow, will join the event. Leonardo Gómez Ponce, an Ecuadorian investigative journalist, is set to join the Berlin fellowship program in 2025. Luis Assardo, a Guatemalan journalist and researcher, who was an alumnus of the 2020/21 program, will also participate and share his expertise in digital security training.

Ronna Rísquez Sánchez, a Venezuelan investigative journalist, will be one of the featured guests. The event will be held in Spanish and German with simultaneous interpretation provided, ensuring accessibility for all attendees.

The event aims to highlight the courage and resilience of these journalists, who continue their vital work despite facing intimidation, threats, and violence. The Refuge Respite Fellowship, a collaboration between RSF and the Panter Foundation, offers these professionals a chance to recharge and regain strength in Berlin, helping them to continue their crucial journalistic work.
