Faulty signaling networks sometimes lead to disruptions on S3 highway

The Stuttgart Public Transport and Tariff Association (VVS) has announced delays and short-term stoppages on the S-Bahn line S3. As of now, the service is experiencing significant disruptions between Backnang and Waiblingen.

These disruptions are primarily due to ongoing infrastructure upgrades, specifically the faulty signaling systems on the route. However, it's important to note that the current service adjustments on the S3 line are not solely due to this issue, but also because of construction work in the Bad Cannstatt station area.

From July 26 to September 6, 2025, the S3 does not run into Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof and terminates at Fellbach instead. This limitation is part of a broader Stammstreckensperrung (core route closure) for the modernization of the inner-city tunnel section between Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (tief) and Stuttgart-Vaihingen.

During this period, passengers on S3 should expect truncated service and are advised to check their connection shortly before departure to stay informed about any changes. They can refer to current electronic timetables or the DB Navigator app for updates.

As of late August 2025, no current information indicates that the faulty signaling system issue in Backnang-Waiblingen has been fully resolved or has caused modifications beyond those stated for the Bad Cannstatt and Stammstrecke works. The overall train traffic in the Stuttgart area remains affected by various infrastructure challenges, but the main documented impact for S3 is the temporary truncation to Fellbach due to these construction works.

Unfortunately, as of now, it's unclear how long the disruption will last. Passengers are encouraged to stay patient and flexible during this time, and to plan their journeys accordingly. The VVS will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
