McDonald's, the renowned American fast-food titan, is heading full steam into Ukraine, planning to open a stunning 10 new restaurants in the country this year. This bold venture signals the company's faith in Ukraine's wartime economy, amidst the chaos and strife, according to The New York Times (NYT).
After Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022, McDonald's temporarily shut its operations in Ukraine. However, the company has since resumed its business, preparing to bring the total number of McDonald's outlets close to 120 - a number that surpasses the pre-war count.
Viktor Mykyta, a top economic advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky, shared his thoughts on the matter with the NYT. He posited that the resurgence of McDonald's in Ukraine indicates that the nation's economy is displaying positive signs, even amidst military actions. Mykyta, who previously served as Governor of Ukraine's far-western Zakarpattia Oblast, emphasized that such operations demonstrate to any potential investors that they, too, can confidently operate in the region.
It's worth noting that Zakarpattia Oblast was the only region in Ukraine that lacked a McDonald's outpost, until this spring, when the region welcomed two McDonald's restaurants in the cities of Uzhhorod and Mukachevo.
The expansion of McDonald's not only provides job opportunities for locals but also generates significant tax revenues. In 2024, McDonald's contributed over $60 million in taxes, making it the industry's largest taxpayer in the nation.
As per the European Bank for Development and Reconstruction (EBRD), Ukraine's economy is forecasted to grow by 3.3% this year, although earlier projections showed over 4% growth. However, rising inflation, an economic slowdown caused by Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, and nationwide labor shortages have had a dampening effect on the forecast.
Despite these challenges, Ukraine has managed to lure back Western businesses that had initially suspended operations due to the war. Companies like Ikea, H&M, and Zara have returned, indicating a ray of hope for the ailing economy.
However, Russia's war has posed obstacles for McDonald's operations as well. In January 2025, a Russian missile strike hit Ukraine's oldest McDonald's, causing extensive damage. Many restaurants, due to frequent air raids, have discontinued their breakfast menus. In response, McDonald's relaunched its breakfast menu at six locations in March.
Interestingly, McDonald's had closed its restaurants in Russia and left the Russian market in 2022, signaling a shift in its strategic focus towards more stable markets.
In a broader perspective, the Ukrainian economy in 2025 shows a combination of cautious recovery and enduring challenges, with growth prospects tightly tied to the security situation and international support.
