Population Boom, Traffic Woes

With its growing population and traffic surge, Leipzig seeks to combat the chaos with Superblocks in the eastern districts!

Since 2009, the city has witnessed a population increase of close to 217,000 inhabitants. The Eisenbahnstraße, coursing through neighborhoods Volksmarsdorf and Neustadt-Neuschönefeld, is amongst the affected zones.

As the city’s figures indicate, the population in these districts has escalated by over 30 percent in recent years. Traffic calming in residential areas is essential to restore some quality of life!

Residents Fight Back

Frustrated by the Eisenbahnstraße’s persistent gridlock, Leipzig residents caught wind of Barcelona’s Superblocks success story and took matters into their own hands.

Sanja Liebermann and Cornelia Bischoff, amongst others, rallied together to form the “Superblocks Leipzig” association, pushing for traffic-calming solutions in their city. Since the project’s launch in May 2023, they’ve seen a noticeable reduction in road congestion near the Hildegardstraße!

New Look for Leipzig's Roads

Having recently expanded Superblocks to the Hermann-Liebmann-Straße and Bennigsenstraße, Leipzig prepares to extend this innovative initiative to the Schulze-Delitzsch-Straße.

Despite the relocation of some parking spaces and access restrictions for larger vehicles, improvements are still in the works to accommodate bicyclists traveling through the Superblocks zones. Stay tuned for updates!
