EU Tightens Iran, Russia Sanctions Over Nuclear Deal, Ukraine Attack
The EU has bolstered its sanctions against Iran and Russia, following Iran's non-compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The EU's actions came after the expiration of a deadline set by Germany, the UK, and France to revive the nuclear deal.
The EU is supplementing existing sanctions with additional measures. These include an arms embargo against Iran and further restrictions on military support for Russia's aggression in Ukraine. The EU is also reimposing sanctions on Iran due to its continued nuclear activities. These sanctions, which were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, include restrictions on Iranian cargo planes using European airports and trade in oil, gas, energy technology, software products, and precious metals. The UN sanctions, which were binding for the EU, have also come back into force. These include a general arms embargo and financial sanctions against individuals and organizations linked to Iran's nuclear program.
The EU's actions aim to pressure Iran to comply with international agreements and to deter further military escalation by Russia. The reimposed sanctions on Iran and the additional measures against Russia reflect the EU's commitment to maintaining global peace and security.
