EU Backs New Solar Alliance to Boost Manufacturing and Create Jobs
The European Commission has backed a new Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance, set to boost solar manufacturing in Europe. The initiative, one of several in the EU Solar Energy Strategy adopted in May 2022, will be coordinated by Sun Qixin. The Alliance aims to scale up manufacturing technologies and engage with EU and Member States on solar issues.
Once established, the Alliance will deliver an action plan for the solar industrial value chain and engage with various stakeholders. Its goal is to help the EU reach 30 Gigawatt of annual solar energy manufacturing capacity by 2025. The call for membership is set for November, with a launch expected by the end of the year.
The Alliance will bring together industrial actors, research institutes, consumer associations, NGOs, and other solar PV sector stakeholders. The EC, working with EIT InnoEnergy, will establish the Alliance, building on the success of the Batteries Alliance. Dries Acke, Policy Director of SolarPower Europe, has welcomed the initiative, calling it crucial for strengthening the European solar PV manufacturing sector.
The new Alliance aims to accelerate solar power deployment across the EU and enhance the resilience of the EU's energy system. European Commissioner for the Single Market, Thierry Breton, supports the Alliance to foster job creation in Europe's solar industry. With the call for membership approaching, the solar sector eagerly awaits the Alliance's launch later this year.
