Essential: Individuals needing state pension supplement call-backs need to have their National Insurance number ready - this is why
Revamped Article:
Gotta've that National Insurance number on tap if you're hankerin' for a callback about sprucin' up your state pension with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
That number'll be put to use in a security checkcast on your identity, and feedback we've gotten from y'all says it's crucial.
The DWP's gonna give it a couple tries to get in touch with ya, and if both strikes out, they'll shoot over a text to call 'em back within the month. Once the initial call's outta the way, expect more in-depth convo's about buying those state pension top-ups.
One of our readers asked their DWP talker for a heads up on the estimated timeframe for the deep-dive, and they spilled the beans about a whopping 400,000 folks waitin' in line for that callback kiss.
The DWP and HMRC teamed up to handle all the state pension top-ups business, and they got swamped with calls and payments in the weeks leadin' up to the crunchy April 5th deadline.
We spilled the beans on reader reports of a backlog that could stretch up to eight months for state pension top-ups payments last week.
The DWP launched a callback service for any folks who signed up, but it's long been closed shop now. If you're game, you should still be in the hunt for those sweet, sweet top-ups on earlier years.
The DWP promises to send a text a day before the call to give ya a heads up, but our readers didn't mention gettin' squat, and one gal even got the call outta the blue. She failed the security check because she couldn't remember her National Insurance number on the fly while she was chillin' in the park.
'I got that call back last week, but with no prior warning. I was smack dab in the middle of the park, and didn't got no documents on me, so I couldn't answer the questions put to me by the caller,' she said.
'I was told they'd only try again twice, and that was the first go-around. Next time they call, I could be drivin', dealin' with an emergency, or any of the life events that prevent someone from pickin' up their blower. I find the situation ludicrous, inefficient, and a waste of time and resources. I might not even know whether I should jazz up my National Insurance or not.'
Another one of our readers was on the road when the call came through, so they pulled over to take it. They aced the security check, but they're still waitin' on a callback, closer to a couple weeks at this point. They dropped a buncha dough on one of their years earlier on and it still ain't showin' up on their record.
'I paid for a year nearly two years back, and it's still nowhere to be found on my records,' they said. 'I pity the folks who paid 'em thousands and it just vanished. The DWP and HMRC are a right mess. I didn't mince my words when I said that.'
So, are ya stuck in that state pension top-ups backlog? Did you call the DWP to set a callback for your state pension top-ups? Let us know your tale, whether you managed to buy those top-ups after using the service, or if ya never heard back after payin'.
State Pension Top-ups Backlog Ain't Just A Myth
If you put in a holler to the DWP, give us a shout and share your experience. Let us know if you successfully bought those top-ups after goin' through the service, and if ya paid up and ain't heard squat, tell us your story at: [email protected]
One reader who got the call, aced the security check in mid-April, and was told they'd get a follow-up call, left hangin' with no specific timing. Another reader missed the first call, couldn't remember a digit on their National Insurance number, and have been bananza callin' the DWP.
A DWP spokesperson said: 'We set up an online service for individuals to register their interest and request a callback to ensure that everyone has a chance to boost their state pension. We've doubled the staff to process those callback requests and 'ere we are, dustin' off the SMS messages to let ya know we're 'bout to call ya a day ahead.'
Retirement columnist and former Pensions Minister, Steve Webb, said: 'The idea of a callback service to handle the surge in demand before the deadline was a good call. But it now needs to be executed with a dash of customer-friendly vibes. Calling folks out of the blue with no warning isn't the best approach.'
Webb, a partner 'tuh LCP, added: 'The right to buy historic state pension contributions should be sacrosanct to some folks, and it ain't fair if someone misses phone calls or can't rattle off their National Insurance number off the top of their head and can't take advantage of that.'
