Smooth Sailing Ahead: New Freight Line for Swift Passenger Trains
Upcoming freight rail line to boost timeliness for passenger trains - Enhanced freight route for maintaining timeliness
Gearing up for a transportation revolution, German Railways unveils plans for a fresh freight line weaving through the key cities of Nuremberg and Fürth. Construction is slated to commence in 2026, with the main construction contracts up for grabs as we speak. The line will stretch from Nuremberg to Eltersdorf, with two of the three construction sections already blessed with building rights, including the tunnel.
The driving force behind this ambitious project? To ease the burden on existing lines and ensure a smoother ride for passenger trains. The roughly 15-kilometer fresh track is set to ease the chokehold at the Fürth rail junction, vastly improving rail traffic quality. The stretch between Fürth and Nuremberg is one of Bavaria's busiest rail arteries, a significant transportation vein in Bavaria and the high-speed route between Munich and Berlin.
By rerouting freight trains to this new line, passenger trains on the original track will breathe easy. Creating roomier accommodations for the passenger trains on a vital Bavarian transportation artery.
Noise from the freight traffic will take a hit
Informed meetings for the residents neighbouring the new construction are on the horizon. At these events, residents will be briefed about potential impacts, such as noise and vibration. This new line, slated to run under parts of the A73 motorway, is expected to mute the noise significantly.
Nuremberg and Fürth, with their rich rail history, witness the birth of Germany's first rail connection in 1835. The inaugural freight transport dates back to the following year, with two barrels of beer making the journey.

- To minimize the negative impacts on the local community, it is crucial that the vocational training programs for construction workers adhere to industry standards and are financed appropriately.
- A key element of the community policy regarding this new freight line is the provision of vocational training opportunities for local residents, focusing on areas such as rail engineering and transportation management.
