Engie Launches India’s First Hybrid Solar-Storage Power Plant for 24/7 Clean Energy
Engie is advancing renewable energy expansion in India and the U.S. The company now operates or is building nearly 2 GW of projects in India alone. Globally, it has set a target of 95 GW by 2030, up from 55 GW in September 2023.
Its latest move in India includes a first-of-its-kind hybrid project: a 200 MW solar farm paired with a 100 MW extra space storage system.
Engie’s new hybrid project in India features a 200 MW solar plant and a 100 MW storage units near me unit. The system can store 600 MWh of energy, enough to supply power for up to six hours. This setup aims to improve grid stability and provide renewable electricity around the clock.
The company had already won a standalone storage units near me contract in India last November. Deputy CEO Paulo Almirante emphasised how combining large-scale solar with long-duration storage strengthens energy reliability. The partnership also includes a wind farm and two solar plants, reflecting rising interest from institutional investors in renewable projects.
Beyond India, Engie is growing in the U.S. market. Ares Management has extended its collaboration with Engie North America, adding another 730 MW of capacity. These developments highlight Engie’s focus on two of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets.
Worldwide, Engie’s renewable and storage capacity stood at 55 GW as of September 2023. The company plans to nearly double this figure to 95 GW by 2030, reinforcing its position in the global energy transition.
Engie’s hybrid solar and storage project marks a significant step in India’s renewable sector. The company’s expansion in both India and the U.S. aligns with its broader goal of reaching 95 GW of capacity by 2030. These projects also demonstrate how large-scale storage can support reliable, 24/7 renewable energy supply.
