Elon Musk's Departure from Trump's Administration After a Black Eye Incident
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire behind Tesla, SpaceX, and X, has officially parted ways with Donald Trump's administration. At a recent press conference, Musk sported a black eye, which he attributed to a playful exchange with his five-year-old son X Æ A-12, or X for short. Musk told reporters that he had encouraged his son to punch him in the face, and was surprised to find that a five-year-old packs quite a punch!
The press conference also saw Trump thanking Musk for his service in setting up and running the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump handed Musk a golden key in a White House-branded box, calling it a "special present". Musk, wearing a DOGE-branded cap and T-shirt with "The Dogefather" written on it, commented that it wasn't the end of DOGE, but the beginning, and that the team would only grow stronger.
During the conference, Trump also discussed various global conflicts, such as the potential agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the near deal with Iran regarding nuclear weapons, and the de-escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan.
Musk's Troubled tenure at DOGE
Musk was tasked with cutting government spending by sacking federal workers and eliminating bureaucratic waste as head of DOGE. However, his tenure was marked by controversy and criticism. Critics claimed that DOGE led to drastic cuts in America's humanitarian efforts, diminishing the country's global influence. Despite promising savings of up to $2 trillion, DOGE currently estimates its efforts have saved $175 billion. Musk claimed the savings could eventually reach a trillion dollars.
Trump read out a list of alleged savings made by DOGE, including $101 million cut from DEI policies in the Department of Education, $59 million on hotel rooms for migrants in New York, $42 million on a social and behavioral change project in Uganda, and $8 million on a project to make mice transgender. However, questions about the accuracy of these figures persist.
Frustration and Conflict
Throughout his tenure, Musk expressed frustration about resistance to his ideas and clashed with other senior members of the Trump administration. He claimed that DOGE was unfairly blamed for cuts that had nothing to do with his department, and became known as the "DOGE boogie man". Despite this, Musk's father, Errol Musk, insisted that there had been "no rift" between Elon and Trump.
As a special government employee, US law allowed Musk to serve for just 130 days, which expired around the time of the press conference. Musk announced his departure on social media, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.
